Double Call Out For Coastguard As Rescue And Evacuation Needed

Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguard teams were called into action twice in one day.

The calls came on March 28 as the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Belfast Coastguard passed on a 999 call.

Heading to the coast just south of Workington Whitehaven and Maryport worked with Cumbria Police, North West Ambulance Service and Cockermouth Mountain Rescue.

Performing a rope rescue the incident was brought to a swift conclusion.

Another 999 call came in reporting a casualty in need of assistance on the beach in the vicinity of North shore Whitehaven.

Arriving on scene, working alongside medical crews from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust to stabilise the casualty.

They were then stretchered to the awaiting ambulance before being taken to hospital.

The Coastguard are responsible for the initiation and coordination of civil maritime search and rescue within the UK search and rescue region.

This includes the mobilisation, organisation and tasking of adequate resources to respond to persons either in distress at sea, or to persons at risk of injury or death on the cliffs or shoreline of the UK as well as some inland waters (for Cumbria this includes Derwentwater, Ullswater, Coniston and Windermere).

They are also responsible for when suspicious items (ordnance/pyrotechnics), Royal Fish (whales, sturgeons, porpoises and dolphins) wash up on the beach.
