The Final Of The Cumberland Women’s County Cup Decided As Previous Winner Meet Again

By Robert Haile

The final for the Women’s Cumberland County Cup has been decided and past winners meet again.

With current holders Carlisle United Ladies being knocked out 2-1 in the semifinal by Penrith AFC Ladies on March 17, as they made their third consecutive final.

It was left to Abbeytown Ladies and Workington Reds Ladies to fight it out on March 24 for a spot in the final, after they had to rearrange the fixture.

Lancashire North/West league side Abbeytown were up against it as Workington Reds Ladies play a couple of division above them in the North West Regional league.

In the end Workington Reds booked their place with two goals for Bea Barber, Holly Redmond and Hayley Bracken to give them a 0-4 win to set up a repeat of the last time they won the competition.

Workington Reds Ladies will face Penrith AFC Ladies at Borough Park on Wednesday, May 1, with the final kicking off at 7pm (19:00).

For the Reds it will possibly be the final time they run out as Workington Reds as they change their name to Workington Town for the 2024-25 season.
