Strong Winds Lead To Coniston Call Out For Mountain Rescue Teams

Strong winds on the fella lead to a call out for the Coniston and Duddon and Furness Montain Rescue teams.

With the Met Office forecasting gusts on the Old Man of Coniston in excess of 50mph, and snow it was only a matter of time on March 23 before a call came in and at 10.05, that call came.

Preparing for a stretcher rescue – Coniston Mountain Rescue

A gentleman walking around Goat’s Water was blown over and sustained a leg injury which prevented him walking further.

Cumbria Police asked Coniston Mountain Rescue to assist, and two Land Rovers were despatched up the Walna Scar track to the rock step, and the team walked up from there.

Coniston had a number of our team members assisting with the Coniston 14 road race who were therefore unavailable for this incident because of the timing.

With a relatively long stretcher-carry back down and Coniston short of numbers, colleagues at Duddon and Furness MRT were asked for assistance, and they kindly came over to help.

In pretty serious conditions, the man was assessed, strong pain relief given, and a leg splint applied.

He was then stretchered off the hill, and was taken by ambulance from Coniston’s base to Furness General Hospital for further treatment.
