Workington Finches Look To Make It Back To Back Finals

By Robert Haile

Workington Rugby Union Finches are looking to make it back to back Plate finals.

Last seasons plate winners are one game away from a return to the final when they host the Amber Valley Tigers Ladies on Sunday, March 24, in the Papa Johns Plate semifinal.

The game is being dedicated to the memory of Sue ‘Birdy’ Bird who passed away almost a year ago.

The Finches will be holding a raffle and auction of a signed England Red Roses T-Shirt with proceeds going to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue.

The journey started against local rivals Keswick on October 1 as they were knocked out of the Papa Johns Cup 12-10.

Two awarded home wins against Northallerton and North Ribblesdale sandwiched a 15-53 demolition of Durham City.

Amber Valley Tigers followed a similar route knocked out of the Cup 12-18 by Mellish before a 7-19 win over Gainsborough and a 15-26 victory at Winnington Ladies and then a home win awarded against St Neots put them into the semifinal.

The game kicks off at 1:30pm (13:30) on Sunday, March 24, at Ellis Sports Ground Workington.
