A specialist survey team has been brought in to hunt for old iron mine shafts and the condition of the ground as Millom project moves forward.

The survey team started work on Monday, March 11, and should take around two weeks as it carries out ground investigations on land near Millom that has been identified as the location for a unique and inclusive visitor attraction.

David Savage, Chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said: “People may see some activity taking place on site, so we feel it’s important to clarify what’s happening and why.

“This is simply a crucial and timely standard step when a scheme like this is being developed.

“The results will provide valuable information that will go on to inform the design process as it goes forward.”

Plans for The Iron Line propose the sensitive enhancement of RSPB Hodbarrow to create a new route incorporating the location’s unique sea wall and coastal lagoon, for use by residents and visitors to the area.

A planning application for the scheme, part of Millom Town Deal, has been submitted.

Due to the historic use of the site, which is part of the former iron mining and associated works, it is now necessary to determine the location of old mine shafts as well as the condition of the ground for any potential contamination.

Background information has been collated and drilling rigs have been brought onto the site to take core samples.

If plans are approved, The Iron Line would see a new welcome centre built at the location with a cafe, retail area and events room providing new employment and volunteering opportunities.

A new multi-use and inclusive pathway will be installed along with new signage and seating, bird hides and viewing platforms.

An existing bird hide would be provided with new cladding and a living roof, supporting the enhancement of wildlife habitats.

In addition, the location would be provided with new access for visitors, landscaping and a purpose built pay and display car park offering disabled parking spaces, EV charging facilities and bicycle storage.

Millom Town Deal secured £20.6 million from the Government’s Towns Fund in November 2022 with an additional £8.7 million in match funding to help the town and its communities to thrive in the future.

Working with Cumberland Council, the money will be used to deliver four projects. Alongside The Iron Line, the Millom Town Deal includes Activating Community Health, Reactivating Heritage Buildings and Connecting Millom and Haverigg.

Work continues on other parts of the Town Deal projects.

The latest plans for a scheme to improve ways to move around Millom and Haverigg sustainably were shared with the community on Wednesday, March 6, at a drop-in public engagement event at Millom Guide Hall
