World Championships of Downhill Skateboarding and Street Luge Held In The Philippines

The World Championships of Downhill Skateboarding and Street Luge were eventually held in the Philippines.

The postponed 2023 World Championships of Downhill Skateboarding and Street Luge took place in Tagaytay, The Philippines with the finals being ran on Sunday, February 25.

The event, which saw more than 80 competitors assemble from 18 different nations, took place on the beautiful but treacherous Sampaloc to Talisay Road on a 2,300 metre-long track which drops almost 300 metres along its snaking course of sweepers and hairpin bends.

With speeds of 80 kilometres per hour clocked previously, the gathering was always going to be a scorcher but this close-knit and courageous scene outdid themselves this time around, and in a location which has to be seen to be believed.

The European nations and Canada dominated the event with Italian Stefano Barbizzi taking gold in the Downhill Skateboarding with Spain’s Marc Escoda Turro second and France’s Adrein Paynel third.

In the women’s event Netherlands Lisa Peters took gold ahead of Canadian Katerina Hill with New Zealand’s Elissa Mah in third.

The Street Luge provided an Asian winner as Abdil Adzeem Ahmad Mahdzan from Malaysia took gold with Australian Graham Brittian second and Canadian Kolby Parks third.

Canada almost had a clean sweep with Morrah Jakubiec taking gold with compatriot Tatyana Hill in third as America’s Samantha Marsteller splitting the pair in second.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “Please join us in congratulating not just the new World Championships but everyone who entered, organised or assisted in a spectacular new chapter in the history of Downhill Skateboarding and Street Luge.”
