Walker Rescued After 20 Meter Fall On Sharp Edge

A walker was rescued by Keswick and Penrith Mountain Rescue teams after a 20 meter fall on Sharp Edge.

An almost 6 and a half hour operation was launched after Keswick and Penrith Mountain Rescue teams were called after a walker came across a woman who had fallen 20m down a gully on Sharp Edge.

Although suffering multiple injuries she had somehow managed to stop herself falling much further and was fortunate to have received excellent first aid by a passing Royal Marine whilst awaiting mountain rescue support.

As it was a complex rescue Penrith Mountain Rescue and Coastguard helicopter assistance was requested.

In wet conditions Sharp Edge is notoriously slippy so a safety line was established to get team members with rescue equipment along the Edge.

A twin rope system was then set up to enable the treated and packaged casualty to be lowered down the gully to a doctor from the Penrith team.

Low cloud meant a stretcher carry was necessary to a point where the Coastguard helicopter could land and airlift the woman to hospital.

A spokesperson for Keswick Mountain Rescue said: “Many thanks to the passing walkers, Penrith MRT, and Coastguard 912 for their help.

“Our team is 100 percent funded through donations. Often when we go out on a rescue, people tell us they’d like to buy us a coffee or a pint, which is much appreciated.

“For good reason however, we cannot use your Mountain Rescue donations towards social events such as a trip to the pub.

“‘Buy me a coffee’ allows us to have a small social fund so that the team can get together outside of rescues or training.”
