A treasured Lakeland hotel with over three hundred years of history is calling for stories from past visitors.
The Swan Hotel and Spa at Newby Bridge has put out a call to its visitors, asking them to share memories, pictures and stories for a unique view of the hotel across the years.
Established at the end of the 17th century, the original coaching inn provided accommodation and services for passing travellers.
Enchanted by its picturesque location on the banks of the River Leven, close the foot of Lake Windermere, it became a destination in its own right for longer stays, holidays and celebrations.
“The idea for creating a memory archive came about after talking to a guest whose family have been visiting for at least four generations,” says The Swan’s marketing manager, Becky Edmondson.
“So we invited all our lovely visitors to send stories, pictures and memories from their stays.
“We were absolutely staggered to receive over 800 entries, from locals who treat themselves to a regular spa break, to visitors from across the world.”
People were encouraged to submit their stories over social media through a giveaway, where one entry was pulled at random to receive a complimentary stay.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the lucky winning memory is fittingly romantic.
Nicola Brown from Heaton Mersey, Stockport, was first whisked to the hotel by her boyfriend, Martin, for her birthday on February 24 2012, where he popped the question and after marrying in December 2013, they began their honeymoon at The Swan.
They came back and celebrated their 10-year anniversary at the hotel in December 2023 and submitted their story a few weeks ago.

On hearing she’d won, Nicola said: “We can’t believe it; The Swan holds a special place in our hearts and I’d simply wanted to share its part in some of the most important events in my life.
“To win a free stay is wonderful, I can’t wait to come back in April and relive that magical engagement visit with Martin, he’ll probably be annoyed if I don’t bring him.”

Even since Nicola first stayed in 2012, the hotel has seen many updates, including an extensive luxury refit after severe flooding.
From original coaching inn to hotel, becoming a wedding venue and spa, its history captured through the eyes of guests will form a very special digital display for visitors to browse, enjoy, and maybe find inspiration for their next family celebration or spontaneous weekend escape.
“It’s clear The Swan has been loved by generations, who often comment on our real ‘home from home’ feel,” adds Becky.
“First-time or longtime visitor, we love talking to guests about their experiences, and now we are preserving them.
“It’s a living project, We’re adding to the digital display all the time, so come and share your memories, or post them via our social media and we’ll include them.
“The unofficial contest for ‘longest-standing visitor’ is certainly hotting up.”
