On Sunday, January 21, two walkers set out for a challenging around the Fairfield Horseshoe.

Langdale MRT out in Storm Isha – Langdale Mountain Rescue

After suffering a couple of falls due to the weather, they couldn’t continue and took shelter behind a broken down wall, near to Hart Crag, near to the summit of Fairfield.

Whilst being battered by the wind and rain the call for assistance was made and in the position they were, on the boundary between Langdale Mountain Rescue area and Patterdale MRT, discussions were had about who would answer.

Langdale decided to take it, as it was anticipated that Patterdale may be required to offer assistance with a potential major incident around Penrith.

Set off via Hartsop and forcing their way up as they had to fight the wind, rain and swollen streams they were met by two RAF teams who were training in the area and turned out to assist.

A Coast Guard helicopter valiantly attempted to get in to reach the casualties but was beaten back by the weather.

Two further groups of team members set off up Scandale valley also in an attempt to reach the casualties.

Eventually the first teams were able to locate and secure the casualties and quite literally crawled back down towards Hartsop to get some shelter.

Assisted by the RAF teams they were able to recover the casualties to the valley floor after overcoming some very challenging ground and weather conditions.
