History Making Workington Comets Sign German International Celina Liebmann

Workington Comets have made British Speedway history as they announced German international Celina Liebmann as signing number five.

World Number One Liebmann is no stranger to making speedway history when she became the first woman to appear in the 2022 FIM Speedway Grand Prix Series (SGP2) and is now the first to sign with a professional British club.

Celina Liebmann – Workington Comets

Workington Speedway promoter Andrew Bain is delighted at the prospect of the German International in the Comets septet next season: “When we saw Celina flying around Northside in June it stuck in our minds. She was very quick that day, her times proved that.

“So come the start of our team building for 2024, her name had to be on the team sheet. She already has experience of some of the tracks in the UK from the Women’s Open Championship.

“So we got in touch with her and straight away her enthusiasm was fantastic, she was very complimentary of the track and how she loved it here in June – so from that it was easy to get her on board for 2024.

“Celina is adding to an already strong team for 2024, our fans should be getting very excited.

“She will be a valuable asset to the team in the Championship next season and we can only see even more improvement from her.”

Liebmann dominated around the Northside track when she scored a flawless 12-point maximum in the fourth round of the Women’s Open Championship but her heat times were very fast and competitive to that of times regularly seen last season.

The 22-year-old from Munich, is a part of the Stal Gorzów squad in Poland and will join captain Craig Cook, Sam McGurk, Tate Zischke and Annti Vuolas as a Comet for 2024.

Liebmann will join the Comets lineup with an assessed 4.00 average.
