Allotment Competition Donates Hundreds To Egremont Foodbank

Bridge End Allotments Marrow Competition has handed over £300 to Egremont Foodbank.

The annual competition was first put forward by William Maxwell to provide a bit of fun for the allotment and to raise funds for charity.

With a marrow weighing 86lbs (39kg) Sean Beatson won the competition that was held at Egremont Rugby Union.

William Maxwell, well known throughout Cumbria for his connection to the County and Egremont Rugby Union as kitman, groundsman and physio presented the £300 to Lead Officer Sandra Clements at the Foodbanks Methodist Centre base.

Also in attendance were Councillors Sam Pollen and Michael McVeigh who posted on social media: “Pleasure for Sam (Pollen) and I joining the Egremont bridge end allotment members who having their annual fundraising day in the Egremont Rugby Union club raised £300 pounds.

“Some fantastic Marrows grown with the overall winner Sean Beatson, who was working so Cup received by committee member Michael Walker, Chairman William Maxwell presented the £300 pounds to Sandra Clements lead officer of Food Bank in the Meeting place Egremont Methodist Centre, Michael Donnelly, Ken Shaw committee members delighted seeing the good work done with the allotment group going to such a worthy cause. Well done all.”

North Lakes Foodbank is a volunteer based organisation and the Foodbank at Egremont along with the others at Wigton, Cockermouth, Whitehaven, Millom, Maryport and Workington welcome any donations.
