Varied Season Continues For Cumbria’s Rugby Union Sides

The mixed start to the season continued for Cumbria’s rugby union sides and one withdraws from the league.

In Regional 1 North West Blackburn set the early pace after a tight 25-24 win at home to Rossendale while Macclesfield join them at the top after a 46-6 victory over Stockport Saturday, September 16.

Penrith are finding life difficult after a 17-34 defeat to Manchester took them to the foot of the table as Kendal slide into the top four with a 47-20 victory over Northwich, Anselmians won 13-11 against Sandbach and Wirral were 17-22 winners at Leek.

League leaders Blackburn head to Leek on Saturday, September 23, as Rossendale host Anselmians and Macclesfield travel to Manchester.

Wirral welcome Stockport as the two Cumbrian teams hit the road with Penrith looking for a win at Northwich and Kendal head to Sandbach wanting to build on a strong start.

In Regional 2 North Percy Park are clear at the top after a 31-12 win over Keswick on Saturday, September 16, with Durham City just getting the better of Upper Eden 15-14.

Cockermouth came back from Middlesborough empty handed as they were beaten 47-0 as Consett won 39-30 against Stockton.

In the later games Aspatria beat Northern 24-10 and West Hartlepool lost 23-27 at home to Morpeth.

Saturday, September 23, features a Cumbrian derby as Cockermouth host Aspatria, Upper Eden face another tough test against leaders Percy Park while Keswick face Middlesbrough.

Consett take on West Hartlepool while in the later kick offs Morpeth face Durham City and Stockton welcome Northern.

In Regional 2 North West leaders Crewe & Nantwich stayed top with a 27-17 win against Vale of Lune on Saturday, September 16, and Bowden kept pace with a 27-24 win over Whitchurch while Firwood Waterloo sit a point behind after a 61-17 victory against Kirkby Lonsdale.

Altrincham Kersal swap places with Birkenhead Park after a close 33-32 loss while Douglas (I.O.M) dropped to second bottom with a 17-21 loss to Liverpool St Helens and Winnington Park lost 45-19 to Burnage.

Crewe & Nantwich will look to keep their unbeaten start going at Whitchurch on Saturday, September 23, while Bowden head to Altrincham Kersal and Firwood Waterloo make the trip to Liverpool St Helens.

Kirkby Lonsdale will be wanting to bounce back against Winnington Park, Burnage host Birkenhead Park and Vale of Lune welcome Douglas (I.O.M).

There is one less match in the Cumbria League after Silloth have withdrawn from the division.

The lead changed hands on Saturday, September 16, with Hawcoat Park losing 14-12 to Aspatria 2nd as Carlisle replaced them at the top with a 5-28 win at Whitehaven.

Workington jumped up to second with a 12-7 victory over Creighton as Keswick 2nd lost 62-5 at Wigton.

Windermere lost 10-12 at home to Penrith 2nd and Millom were beaten 18-24 by St Benedicts.

Carlisle face Windermere on Saturday, September 23, as Workington head to St Benedicts and Aspatria 2nd travel to Keswick 2nd.

After missing out last week Egremont travel to Penrith 2nd while Hawcoat Park host Millom and Creighton host Whitehaven.
