DC’s latest foray into the superhero market with Blue Beetle leaves you laughing and crying at this family centred flick.
The film follows Jamie Reyes as an alien scarab chooses him to be its symbiotic host, bestowing the recent college graduate with a suit of armourthat’s capable of extraordinary powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero known as Blue Beetle.
DC’s latest superhero movie is a standalone movie you don’t need to watch any other movies to watch this.
The cast of this movie is pretty unique in that most of the cast is Mexican, lead by Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) who plays Blue Beetle.
Xolo Maridueña was really good as the titular character and alter-ego Jaime Reyes reminding you of a Iron Man-like superhero.
He brings a lot of energy to his performance filled with charisma, awkwardness and relatability because of his love for his family.
The theme of family is really at the centre of Blue Beetle, it’s really hard not to ignore it which is similar to Shazam.
As the film moves on, it does feel like everything that was done to make this possible was filled with heart by the filmmakers and knew just to be simply entertaining, hitting at all the right beats to make you laugh and cry.
Of course, the film is not without its faults. It is cheesy at times, does feel generic and doesn’t seem like it wants to outshine the rest of the films not just in DC but everything superhero in general.
My personal issue would have to be how they handled Susan Sarandon’s character and the nemesis of Jaime.
While I get where they are going, it felt like it needed to be more compelling and not just some cartoony villains.
By the end, I walked out of Blue Beetle thinking how good it was to see an enjoyable film with the message of family that hit me emotionally.
Would I recommend the movie?
Yes.
The movie does have a very important mid-credits scene so stay in your seat.
My Rating: 7/10
