Champion Of Champions Crowned In Busy Week For Cumbrian Bowlers

Cumbria has crowned their Champion of Champions as the West Cumbria Knockout finalists have been decided.

The season is coming to a head as titles are won and leagues are decided while bowlers keep one eye on the National Finals.

Eden Valley Mixed Triples

The Eden Valley Mixed Triples Division One has come to a close with Linton sitting top of the table by one point.

In the Mixed Rinks League, Caldbeck’s game with Skelton was abandoned as Appleby and Temple Sowerby was postponed.

The three games that survived on Thursday, August 3, Penrith Friars won 7-1 against Fitz Park A as Lazonby came away with a 0-8 win at Fitz Park B while Penrith Castle Park and Shap could not be separated in a 4-4 draw.

The league fixtures took a break as the semifinals of the Knockout Cup took over on Tuesday, August 1, with Cleator Moor beating Whitehaven A 6-3 and Wigton coming away with a 7-2 win over Seaton.

In two rearranged fixtures it was good travelling for Cockermouth’s Harris Park teams as Seascale lost 2-7 to Harris Park A who move into second and Whitehaven B lost 3-6 to Harris Park B.

In the West Cumbria Fours on 4 Friday, August 4, Workington A increased their lead with a 0-7 win at Whitehaven B while Whitehaven A won 2-5 at Cleator Moor.

Fitz Park took a step towards securing third place with a 0-7 win at Vulcan Park as the battle for fourth intensified with Seaton winning 2-5 at Workington B and Cockermouth beating Maryport 5-2.

Earlier in the week Workington A played Whitehaven A in their rearranged fixture and won 5-2.

County Matches

The Cumbria Champion of Champions was crowned at Fitz Park Bowling Club on Sunday, August 6, after two days of competition.

The singles competition started off on Saturday, August 5, with three rounds of games and in the first round a 10-21 win for Brannan over Metcalfe, Walker beat Wallace 16-21, Holding squeezed through 21-20 against Baxter and Fletcher won 21-10 against Vallely.

Moving into the quarter finals Walker overcame Brannan 17-21, Stewart lost 18-21 to McManus, Taylor beat Peart 21-5 and Holding won 21-14 against Fletcher.

In the semifinals, Walker won 21-13 against McManus as Taylor beat Holding 21-20.

In the final on Sunday Walker beat Taylor 21-14 to become only the third Whitehaven player to lift the trophy.

The Cumbria Alsop Cup team played their rearranged game on Sunday, August 6, against Northumberland at Portland BC to complete the campaign.
