The world’s most famous doll Barbie has come to the big screen with a lot of hype and a clear message to the world.
Set in the colourful Barbie Land, stereotypical Barbie lives a perfect life every single day. Barbie (Margot Robbie) suffers a crisis that leads her to question her world and her existence.
One day, she shows signs of being…a human. She decides to go to the Real World to find the cure to make herself perfect again.
Barbie is a fun movie that has surprisingly plenty of heartwarming moments and good messages to offer.
The set designs are eye-catching and on point as well while both Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling nailed their parts.
Barbie is a weirdly fun movie that fills with this very interesting concept, definitely, the first time that’s ever been done. Director Greta Gerwig has created this whole new style of filmmaking specifically for Barbie, from the intentionally weird yet creative editing to some awkward and cringe scenes, I found the comedy so funny instead of cringe, though.
Surprisingly or maybe not, Barbie deals with some serious stuff and was always bound to be a divisive movie because of its ‘feminism’ yes, that’s pretty much what this movie is about, but I feel like it was expected to be as such from the get-go.
I honestly don’t mind it as long as it’s entertaining – and it was for at least the first act of the movie.
Barbie is at its best when it’s extremely self-aware and knows exactly what it’s doing and how it’s doing it, but then halfway in, it feels like the movie gets a little too carried away and takes itself too seriously, losing its humour somewhere down the line and leaving us experiencing moments are painful to sit through.
My Rating: 6/10.
