The Office of the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria has announced the appointment of Alexander Scott as the new Lord-Lieutenant.
The announcement was made today, July 5, 2023, that Mr Scott will succeed Claire Hensman, who has diligently served in the role since January 2013.

Assuming his responsibilities immediately, Mr Scott will serve as the representative of His Majesty The King in Cumbria.
As the Lord-Lieutenant, he will work closely with local businesses, charitable organizations, and communities to advance civic, cultural, and social initiatives across the county.
Born and educated in Cumbria, Mr Scott brings extensive experience from his various private sector roles and his Trusteeship of The Francis C. Scott Charitable Trust and Cumbria Community Foundation, ensuring a deep understanding of the county and its needs.
Expressing his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity to serve as the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr Scott stated: “It is a great honour to follow in the footsteps of Claire Hensman and represent His Majesty The King in Cumbria.
“I am committed to supporting civil society, the people, and organisations of Cumbria, and I look forward to working alongside them to promote our rich heritage, culture, and communities.”
Mrs Hensman, reflecting on her tenure as Lord-Lieutenant, said: “It has been an honour to serve as Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria for ten years. I am grateful for the support I have received from the local communities, the Armed Services, the Church, and Carlisle Cathedral.
“I would like to thank everyone, particularly the current and retired Deputy Lieutenants, who have contributed to the Lieutenancy in the County.”
Furthermore, Mrs Hensman extended her good wishes to Mr Scott and his wife, Mrs Samantha Scott, who currently holds the position of High Sheriff this year. She acknowledged the invaluable support of her husband, Peter, who has served as a Deputy Lieutenant and stood by her side throughout her tenure.
The appointment of Mr Scott as Lord-Lieutenant strengthens the bond between the two prominent figures.
Mr Scott’s experience, coupled with his marriage to the current High Sheriff, provides a unique opportunity to forge stronger connections and foster a renewed sense of partnership between the royal family and the region.
The Lord-Lieutenant plays a vital role in championing Cumbria’s prosperity and well-being by supporting various initiatives and working closely with local authorities, organisations, and communities.
