Balcomb Success For Cumbria’s Bowlers As National Final Spot Secured

Mixed bag for Cumbria’s county teams as the Balcomb team booked their place at the National finals.

The county’s national entries and domestic leagues are shaping up nicely as the bowls season heads into the back end of the season.

Eden Valley Mixed Triples

In Division One of the Eden Valley Mixed Triples league leaders Fitz Park A lost 8-2 at Penrith Friars B on Tuesday, June 20.

Appleby A moved into second with a 2-8 win over Shap as Linton’s match with Dalton was postponed due to a waterlogged green and Fitz Park B moved up to fourth with a 10-0 win against Lazonby.

Caldbeck moved into second with a 6-4 victory at home to Penrith Friars A while Appleby B lost 0-10 to Wetheral.

Eden Valley Mixed Rinks

In Mixed Rinks League Caldbeck have increased their lead at the top with a 0-8 win against Fitz Park B and Fitz Park A drop to fourth as their game at Shap was postponed on Thursday, June 22.

Penrith Friars moved into second with an 8-0 win over Penrith Castle Park while Lazonby’s 0-8 win at Temple Sowerby lifts them into third as Appleby beat Skelton 8-0.

Lazonby extended their lead in the Ladies Triples on Thursday, June 22 with a 1-6 at Temple Sowerby.

Shap’s game with Fitz Park was postponed.

West Cumbria Mixed Triples League

The Mixed Triples continued on Tuesday, June 20 with leaders Whitehaven A taking a 13 point lead after a 2-7 win at Vulcan Park.

With no game Workington A dropped to third as Wigton took a narrow 4-5 win away at Seaton.

Cleator Moor moved up to fourth with a 9-0 victory a hime to Whitehaven B as Harris Park A had no match while Harris Park B made the trip to Egremont were they lost 6-3.

Maryport won 7-2 against Seascale.

West Cumbria Fours League

It was a battle of the A and B teams on Friday, June 16 as Whitehaven A took the lead of the league as they beat Whitehaven B 0-7 while Workington A won 5-2 against Workington B.

Fitz Park increased the gap to fourth with a 2-5 win at Cockermouth as Maryport lost 2-5 at home to Cleator Moor and Vulcan Park were beaten 2-5 by Seaton.

County Matches

Cumbria’s Alsop Cup team continued their campaign with a trip to Blackhall Bowling Club to play Durham on Saturday, June 24.

Cumbria Bowls Association President Cliff Harding had to step in late to ensure that Cumbria provided the required players as Durham won 139-99 to take 15 points and Cumbria 7.

Their next Alsop game is on July 15 when they face Northumberland and then Yorkshire on July 22.

Cumbria were involved in the Balcomb Regional Finals on Sunday, June 25, at York Railway Bowls and Social Club.

The Balcomb team selected for what would hopefully be two games was

  • A. Hocking, J. Fuge, J. Park, S. Irwin.

With R. Orchard, P. Wallace selected as reserves.

In the semifinal Cumbria faced Nottinghamshire and in a close game they won 37-35.

Durham took on Derbyshire in the other semifinal as the team from Derbyshire progressed to face Cumbria with a 36-42 win.

With a place at the National Finals at stake Cumbria and Derbyshire kept it close with seven shots in it as the Cumbrian team joined the White Rose team at Royal Lemington Spa with a 32-39 win.

There they will face West winner Wiltshire and then either East winner Essex or South winner Buckinghamshire in the National Final on August 20.
