REVIEW: Flynt Make Hometown Return As Club Paradise Make Whitehaven Debut

By Rachael Grealish

Flynt returned to their hometown with a performance at The Yellow Earl, in Whitehaven, causing fans to go wild and party even through the summer heat.

On Friday, June 16, hundreds turned out to see the four-piece as they took over the Whitehaven nightspot, supported by the North Shields band, Club Paradise.

Kicking off the evening was Club Paradise as they played their first gig in West Cumbria, to a full venue with a selection of original songs, this included the band’s latest EP, ‘The Night Carnival’.

The four-piece – made up of Ryan Young (vocals/guitar), Jackson Vert (lead guitar), Harry Webb (bass) and Nathan Hogg (drums) – were an energetic indie rock band that gave the feel of bands like Foals, all while playing songs that were catchy and danceable, along with that 80’s vibe.

The heat of the recent weather had really set in by the time Flynt got on stage, magnified by the numbers that turned out to see the local wonders.

This didn’t seem to bother the band or even the audience as dozens danced and jumped to original songs by the four-piece – made up of Emma Dockeray leading on vocals, Calvin Thornborrow on bass, Steven Norman on drums and Brad Kavanagh on vocals and guitar.

The band played a selected of some of their most well-known songs such as ‘I Need A Minute’ and even their latest EP ‘Digging’, progressing to finish their set moving from their more indie-pop sound to a more indie-rock feel.

Speaking after the show Brad told The Herdwick News: “This was probably one of the best shows we’ve ever played, everyone was amazing and really supportive.”

Overall, regardless of the heat Flynt kept their energy high and really pumped up the audience – that never once lacked.

Fans can next catch Flynt playing at Kendal Calling on the final day of the festival, Sunday, July 30.
