Max Verstappen Takes Red Bull To 100 Race Wins With Canadian Grand Prix Victory

The rain held off for the Canadian Grand Prix as Max Verstappen continued Red Bull’s unbeaten season, racked up the Constructors 100th race win and equaled a legends total race wins.

The Dutch driver made it six wins from eight as he led home Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in a dominant lights to flag display.

This win takes Verstappen to 41 race victories and equal with Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna.

Drivers championship leader, Verstappen said: “I’m very happy right now. It was not a very straightforward race because of the tyres and It was very cold compared to Friday so we were sliding.

“But, we made it work and to win the 100th GP for the team is pretty incredible.”

Four drivers were handed penalties with Haas hero Nico Hulkenberg dropping from second to fifth for a red flag infringement.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz goes from eighth to eleventh as home favourite Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll also lost three places going from thirteenth to sixteenth while AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda starts in nineteenth after dropping three places from sixteenth, all three for impeding other drivers.

Verstappen led from lights to flag to take the win as Alonso and Hamilton battled each other for second and third.

Ferrari had a good race as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz took fourth and fifth with Sergio Perez’s Red Bull in sixth as Alex Albon’s Williams took seventh after a spectacular qualifying session put him good position.

Esteban Ocon claimed eighth for Alpine with home town hero Lance Stroll finishing ninth for Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas taking the last points place in tenth.

Lando Norris dropped to thirteenth after receiving a 5 second penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct behind the safety car as he was accused of backing the pack of drivers up to allow McLaren to bring both drivers in at the same time.

With McLaren’s Oscar Piastri taking eleventh and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly twelfth ahead of Norris.

AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda finished fourteenth, Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas dropped to fifteenth, Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo took sixteenth as Kevin Magnussen’s Haas and Nyck de Vries for AlphaTauri brought up the rear.

George Russell’s race came to an end when he cause major damage to the brakes of his Mercedes having fought from the back of the grid to the points positions after colliding with the wall causing a safety car.

Williams Logan Sargeant was asked to park the car early in the race.

Verstappen’s lead is increased to 53 points ahead of his teammate Perez in the Drivers Championship with Alonso 71 points further back in third.

In the Constructors Championship Red Bull are 135 points clear of Mercedes who move into second with Aston Martin dropping to third.

The teams and drivers get a weekend without racing before Formula One heads to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montréal for the Canadian Grand Prix on June 16-18.
