Cumbria’s Young Bowlers Book Place In National Finals

Cumbria already have a team heading to Royal Leamington Spa for the National Finals as the under 25’s win the North Region of the White Rose Trophy.

The Cumbrian young guns booked their place at the National Finals with two victories on Sunday, June 11, as the Balcomb and Alsop teams also got off to winning starts.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the West Cumbria Fours League and to mark the occasion a celebration match between last year’s champions, Workington A, and a team comprised of three players from the other clubs who participate in the league, was held on Sunday, June 11, at Workington BC.

The result of the game was very close with Workington winning 73-72 over The Rest of the League.

Eden Valley Mixed Triples

In Division One of the Eden Valley Mixed Triples Fitz Park A are fifteen points clear after being held to a 5-5 draw by Appleby A on Tuesday, June 6.

Linton jump to second place with a 10-0 win over Fitz Park B as Lazonby drop back after a 7-3 loss at Dalston while Penrith Friars B beat bottom side Shap 8-2.

It is tight at the top of Division Two as Temple Sowerby and Penrith Castle Park share the lead after the pair met on Tuesday, June 6.

The 6-4 win for Penrith Castle Park at home to Temple Sowerby move them joint top on 44 points.

Caldbeck won 10-0 at Appleby B to sit third while Wetheral take a 6-4 win over Penrith Friars A.

Eden Valley Mixed Rinks

Fitz Park have maintained their lead at the top of the Mixed Rinks League with a 2-6 win at Appleby as Caldbeck take a 6-2 win at home to Penrith Castle Park on Thursday, June 8.

Shap and Temple Sowerby played out a 4-4 draw while Penrith Friars beat Lazonby 6-2 and Fitz Park B won 6-2 at Skelton.

Penrith Friars Ladies lost 2-4 to leaders Lazonby and Shap picked up a 1-5 win at Temple Sowerby.

West Cumbria Mixed Triples League

There were no league games to open June as the Knockout Cup started on Tuesday, June 6.

Seaton received a walk over from Frizington and Workington A had a bye into the second round.

Cleator Moor went back to Maryport and came away with a 3-6 win while league leaders Whitehaven A kept up their momentum in the cup with a 7-2 win at home to Harris Park A.

It was the battle of the B teams as Whitehaven B lost 2-7 to Harris Park B while Wigton took a 2-7 win back from Vulcan Park, Workington.

Played on Thursday, June 8, Croft beat Egremont 9-0.

The draw for the second round is as follows:

West Cumbria Fours League

Fitz Park’s unbeaten run came to an end in friday, June 9, as they were beaten 5-2 away to Whitehaven B.

The chasing side took full advantage with 7-0 wins for Workington A at Cockermouth and Whitehaven A away to Workington B meant that the Fitz Park slipped down to third place in the table.

It was also a good evening for Vulcan Park who recorded their first win of the season with a 4-3 home win against Maryport and Cleator Moor ran out 7-0 winners at home to Seaton.

County Matches

Over the weekend Cumbria have been involved in several County matches against Lancashire, Northumberland and Nottinghamshire.

The Alsop Cup side got their title defence started against Lancashire on Saturday June 10 at Courtfield BC.

The Cumbrian side contained two debuts with B Potts and T Johnston stepping into the side along with D Hodgson and D Reed travelling as reserves.

Lancashire sadly lost 25 percent of their shots on 2 rinks due missing 2 players as Cumbria ended up winning 133 – 87.75 and took 20 points.

After victory against Yorkshire in the White Rose Trophy Cumbria’s under 25s progressed to the final on Sunday, June 11, at Dunnington BC.

The eight players selected were:

  • Jack Wilson, Bailey Potts, Dave Wilson, Callum Hodgson.
  • Ryan Corkill, Taylor Johnston, Harry Creighton, Ryan Brannan.

In the first game Cumbria’s youngsters faced Lancashire’s under 25s who they overcame 53-32.

In the other semifinal Nottinghamshire beat Northumberland 41-44 to make the final.

In the final Cumbria took to the lead early on in the game against Nottinghamshire and never looked back winning 42-24 to book their place at the National Finals.

On August 12 they will face Kent at Royal Lemington Spa, where the Commonwealth games were held.

Balcomb Trophy team got their campaign underway at Wigton BC on Sunday, June 11, against Northumberland.

With a 44-32 victory Cumbria will head to the Regional finals day where they will face Nottinghamshire in the semifinal and then possibly one of Yorkshire, Durham, Derbyshire or Lincolnshire in the final.
