Spanish Grand Prix Victory For Max Verstappen

By Robert Haile

Red Bull continue their unbeaten season as Max Verstappen claims Spanish Grand Prix victory with Mercedes Lewis Hamilton and George Russell completing the podium.

The season has been ominous with the dominant Red Bull team as Verstappen looks certain to add a third Drivers Championship title but Mercedes performance could show that they won’t have it all their own way.

Having qualified on pole, his first for the Spanish Grand Prix, Verstappen converted this into a race win almost 25 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who two years ago he was going toe to toe with.

Race winner and Championship leader Verstappen said: “To win here again feels incredible. It’s a massive pleasure to drive a car like this. It was important to try and keep the lead into turn one, it was quite tight. From there onwards it was about managing the tyres, I was able to create a big gap.

“We went on to the hards but I didn’t seem to have much grip, I was sliding around quite a lot, the pace was okay but I couldn’t create more of a gap, so we switched to softs and then I just needed to bring it home.

“We’ve had another strong weekend and that’s of course what I like to see for the Team, hopefully we can keep this up throughout the year.”

While Verstappen claimed his fifth win of the season Mercedes finished second and third, their best finish of the season, with Hamilton and Russell.

Sergio Perez, like Russell, had to come through the grid to finish fourth for Red Bull with Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari fifth.

Aston Martin finished sixth and seventh as Lance Stroll led Fernando Alonso home.

Last weeks podium finisher Alpine’s Esteban Ocon came eighth with Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly promoted to ninth and tenth as Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri was handed a 5 second penalty dropping him to twelfth.

Charles Leclerc suffered a difficult race and was lifted to eleventh through Tsunoda’s penalty for forcing Guanyu off the road.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri finished thirteenth, Nyck de Vries’ AlphaTauri took fourteenth with Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas fifteenth.

Williams Alex Albon came home in sixteenth with McLaren’s Lando Norris finishing seventeenth after an early clash with Hamilton.

The final three drivers were Kevin Magnussen’s Haas, Valtteri Bottas’ Alfa Romeo and Logan Sargeant finished twentieth for Williams.

Verstappen’s lead is increased to 53 points ahead of his teammate Perez in the Drivers Championship with Alonso 71 points further back in third.

In the Constructors Championship Red Bull are 135 points clear of Mercedes who move into second with Aston Martin dropping to third.

The teams and drivers get a weekend without racing before Formula One heads to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montréal for the Canadian Grand Prix on June 16-18.
